At the upper elevations the general avalanche hazard is CONSIDERABLE. A foot of new snow driven by strong west to southwest winds have created easily triggered soft slabs to two feet in depth. Slabs will run on lee slopes in areas where a slick, strong melt-freeze crust exists. The crust is above 8,000 feet on northerly aspects and above 9,000 feet on east and west aspects. At mid elevations the hazard is MODERATE in areas underlain by the crust. At low elevations the hazard is LOW as new snow rests on the ground.
Avalanche Discussion
Clearing skies and decreasing temperatures are forecasted for Tuesday night as high pressure builds into the area. Expect overnight lows in the mountains and valley to dip into the single digits before rebounding on Wednesday into the 20s up high and 30s in the lower elevations. Projected mountains wind speeds for Wednesday are in the teens out of the Northwest. The general avalanche hazard at the upper elevations, where new slabs overlie the strong melt-freeze crust, is expected to be MODERATE on Wednesday. Avalanches are unlikely at lower elevations where this sliding surface is absent.
