The general avalanche hazard is MODERATE. Above 8,000 feet new snow and west-southwest winds have formed new dense surface slabs up to one foot in depth on leeward aspects. These slabs are likely to be easily triggered by riders or skiers on steep wind loaded aspects and have some potential to step down to buried weak layers. Below 8,000 feet warm temperatures and rain have combined to create unstable conditions. Wet loose point slides to the ground are possible on steep snow covered slopes. Use caution and avoid avalanche prone terrain, terrain traps and steep hillsides with a loose wet snowpack.

Temperatures will only be a degree or two cooler than yesterdays system. By Friday evening 4 to 7 inches of new snow may accumulate at the higher elevations. Strong winds will continue the formation of dense surface slabs in mid and upper elevation avalanche starting zones. At the lower elevations instability associated with above freezing temperatures will persist. AVALANCHE HAZARD FOR THE TETON, TOGWOTEE PASS/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE AND GREYS RIVER/SOUTHWEST TRAILS AREASThe general avalanche hazard will continue to increase but is expected to remain MODERATE. At the upper elevations dense new slabs will continue to grow in depth and extent and are expected to be sensitive to human triggers. At the lower elevations (below 8,000 feet) wet slides will be possible on steep snow covered slopes. A prolonged period of intense snowfall/rainfall tonight or during the day on Friday could increase the hazard to CONSIDERABLE. Be aware of changing conditions and consult the morning forecast for the latest conditions. Please be advised the the Wyoming Department of Transportation plans to close Teton Pass at 3AM Friday morning for avalanche hazard reduction efforts. Backcountry users are advised to consult area specific forecasts issued every morning as new information may become available and unexpected weather can change conditions.
