Avalanche Activity

Fresh wind slabs represent the main danger.

The fresh wind slabs can be released easily by a single winter sport participant. The avalanche prone locations are to be found especially on wind-protected slopes. They are widespread and are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. As a consequence of new snow and stormy weather the prevalence and size of these avalanche prone locations will increase as the day progresses. In regions neighbouring those that are subject to danger level 4 (high) the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is greater.

Snowpack Structure

Less snow than expected has fallen in particular in the north. 10 to 30 cm of snow will fall until late in the night. The wind will be strong to storm force. The strong wind will transport the fresh and old snow. The fresh wind slabs are lying on soft layers in particular on steep north, northeast and east facing slopes. The old snowpack will be in most cases stable. At elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In particular on sunny slopes a little snow is lying.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will increase during the day.
