Avalanche Activity

TOR 23/2 Localised windslab instabilities, steep N thru E to S aspects mainly above 800m. Elsewhere, stability good. Av Haz Moderate

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of unstable windslab will continue to develop in wind sheltered locations throughout the forecast period. This mainly affecting steep and very steep terrain above 800 metres on North-East to South-East aspects. Some North and South aspects will be affected due to cross loading. Elsewhere, the snowpack will have good stability, icy on wind exposed, previously scoured terrain. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers are expected to continue throughout the forecast period with a longer spell of snow overnight. Snow will settle at low levels by the end of the afternoon as the freezing level lowers to 250 metres from a peak at 850 metres overnight. The wind will be a strong to gale force, generally West-South-Westerly, with severe gales over the summits. Observed Weather Influences: Frequent blustery showers, at times heavy and prolonged, wintry above 400 metres. A strong Westerly wind throughout, with summit gales. The freezing level remained around 600 metres. ObservedSnowStability: There is significant snow loss at lower levels. The snowpack has generally good stability with a widespread surface crust and icy in exposed, previously scoured terrain. Isolated pockets of fresh windslab are building on steep wind sheltered terrain, mainly above 600 metres on a North-East to South-East aspect, but currently are shallow and avoidable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
