The sun and warm temperatures will make it easy to trigger wet avalanches on most slopes. Manage overhead hazards by limiting the time you spend under steep, sunny slopes and cornices. If you travel above 7,000 feet, steer around wind-drifted features on steep slopes.

    You could encounter both triggered and natural wet avalanches as the snowpack becomes wet and weak. Avalanches will start on east aspects early in the day, and they'll begin to show up on westerly aspects later. As blobs of snow shed, they could trigger avalanches in the recent snow and run easily on the underlying crust. Even small avalanches can be dangerous if they push you into rocks or gullies. If you start seeing rollerballs or natural avalanches, it's time to move to lower-angle or more shaded terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

If you travel above 6,000 feet, you may encounter recently drifted snow. We expect that any lingering wind slabs will be difficult to trigger. If you see cracks that shoot through the snow, consider steering around drifted pillows of snow on slopes steeper than 35 degrees.

While sun and warm temperatures has moistened the recent snow already, there's still plenty available for wet avalanches. Observers reported a number of avalanches in the recent snow mid-week. These were mostly small wet loose avalanches, though some small, drier storm and wind slab avalanches were reported on Tuesday. Up to 1 foot of snow accumulated by the 9th leaving the early April crust 1.5-2' below the surface. Below 4,500ft there was little accumulation as most of the precipitation was liquid. 

Most snow will likely be wet or moist. Upper-elevation northerly apspects may hold dry snow on the surface. At low and middle elevations, you will find that much of the snowpack is moist and unfrozen. Snowlines are rapidly receding and open creeks and holes are appearing in the snow at lower and mid elevations. Many low-elevation areas lack enough snow for winter travel or avalanches.
