Heavy snowfall, strong winds, and rising temperatures will push the current snowpack to its tipping point today. Wind slabs 1-3' thick will be very sensitive to human triggering above 7000'. Below 7500', wet, heavy snow has created storm slabs 1-2' thick. The rain/snow level is forecasted to rise to around 6500' this afternoon. Rain/wet snow could create wet loose avalanches up to around 6500'. Expect widespread instability and dangerous avalanche conditions across all aspects and elevations today through tonight. Conditions will be most dangerous above 7000', on leeward terrain features. Dial back your terrain choices to avoid being on or underneath sustained slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

    8-12" (1-1.5"SWE) of new snow has fallen since Saturday morning, with another 12-20" (1-2"SWE) by tonight. Wind speeds are forecasted to be gusting 40+ MPH, with areas along West Mountain likely seeing stronger winds. You can expect to find wind slabs 1-3' thick above 7000'. Wind slabs will become thicker and more sensitive to triggering during throughout the day. Wind slabs will be most dangerous at upper elevation slopes facing N, NE, and E. Local terrain features can alter the prevailing wind direction and cross load snow onto slopes across varying aspects. Pay attention to pillows, dunes, or drifts indicating active wind loading. Look for clues like shooting cracks within the new snow or whumpfing.

    New snow has been falling atop very soft and light snow from Friday. In terrain that is sheltered from the wind, especially below 7500', storm slabs will become reactive today. Rising temperatures today will add strength to the new snow, making human triggering likely. Pay attention to the new snow as it stacks up. Quick observations with your hands or poles can give you a sense of how the new snow is bonding and how the slab is reacting. As conditions become increasingly dangerous today, it's time to manage terrain more conservatively begin avoiding slopes steeper than 30 degrees.

Avalanche Discussion

The advice today is simple: keep your terrain selection simple and avoid avalanche terrain. With three different avalanche problems, 1-2 feet of recent snowfall, strong winds, rising temperatures and rain/snow levels, the conditions today will be very dangerous. This weather event is creating a rapid and intense change to the snowpack and the snowpack needs time to adjust. Don't try to outsmart the snow and mountains today and thread the needle. Identify slopes steep enough to produce avalanches and avoid them.
