The Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 5 PM tonight. Abundant snowfall and strong ridgetop winds have formed large, dense wind slabs in leeward terrain. At the mid and upper elevations, skiers and riders could easily trigger these slides, and natural activity is possible. The rapid loading event over the last 36 hours might be sufficient to reactivate deeper slabs failing on old snow surfaces from October. To mitigate these dangerous avalanche conditions, a conservative approach to terrain selection will be essential. The sparse snowpack is mostly stable at the lower elevations where precipitation was mostly in the form of rain.

    Up to 18 inches of new snow containing close to two inches of snow water equivalent has fallen since Wednesday night. This snowfall combined with strong southwesterly to westerly ridgetop winds to form dense wind slabs two to four feet deep in leeward terrain. These slabs developed on a variety of snow surfaces which include wind pack, near surface facets and sun crusts just below a couple of inches of recent snowfall. Skiers and riders are likely to trigger these dangerous slabs in steep, wind-loaded terrain above 7,500 feet. Natural avalanche activity is also possible.

Flow aloft will veer to the northwest bringing cold, dry air to the region. Overnight, snowfall will diminish and skies will begin to clear. By Saturday morning, mountain temperatures will dip into the single digits before rising into the mid to upper teens during the day. Westerly to northwesterly ridgetop winds will range from 20 to 35 miles per hour.While the chance for natural activity will mostly diminish, and the likelihood of human triggered slides is on a decreasing trend, the consequences of wind slabs up to four feet deep will keep the avalanche hazard CONSIDERABLE at the higher elevations. Although unlikely, the potential of slides going down to October snow might remain. Don’t let sunshine and fresh snow impair your judgement. Heightened avalanche conditions will continue, and a cautious approach to terrain selection is warranted. Give the snowpack some time to adjust to the loading event over the past couple of days.
