Triggering an avalanche is unlikely, but LOW avalanche danger does not mean no avalanche danger. Look for areas of smooth, wind-drifted snow that feels or sounds hollow. Dig down to investigate the snowpack or avoid traveling on this snow to mitigate the unlikely chance of triggering an avalanche.

    What and where is it:Old, hard wind slabs are common across east-facing ravines. In general, the hardness of the upper layers of the snowpack make triggering an avalanche unlikely. However, buried weak layers of snow under these old wind slabs can be found 1 - 2 feet below the snow surface.

    How can you recognize it: Look for smooth, rounded, hollow-sounding drifts. Be cautious around convex rollovers and steep, unsupported slopes. Probe with a hand or ski pole to find hardness changes and areas of concern in the snowpack. Dig down to these layers and assess them to inform your decision to travel on old wind slabs.How can you manage it: Triggering an avalanche is unlikely, but not impossible if you find a thin spot in the snowpack. Travel on hard, wind-scoured surfaces, create a travel plan, and use smart terrain management to mitigate this unlikely scenario.

Avalanche Discussion

After a period of active weather and avalanche activity over the past week, the mountains have had a chance to settle down. 

Old, lingering wind slabs in steep, easterly ravines were found to be highly stubborn and unreactive while traveling and in snowpack instability tests. Poor snowpack structure was found in some areas, however the hardness of the snowpack is effectively preventing the weight of a person from affecting weak layers below. Don’t discount the unlikely chance of finding an unlucky thin spot in the snowpack and triggering an old, hard wind slab. Check out forecaster observations from Tuckerman Ravine and Huntington Ravine to get a more detailed analysis of the current snowpack.

Yesterday, we received a report of a skier triggering a wind slab avalanche on top of a firm crust in Crawford Notch. Though no avalanche problem is listed at elevations below 3000 feet, it’s important to remember that avalanches can occur in isolated areas where there is enough snow on a slope to slide. There is currently limited avalanche terrain in Crawford Notch, and other low-elevation areas, with the ability to produce an avalanche - but if you are hunting for the biggest, most developed snow slopes in this terrain, avalanches are always a possibility.
