Wind Slab avalanches will be possible on North and East slopes wherever the wind has blown snow to.  These slabs may be obvious and present on the snow surface or they may be burried beneath the most recent light dry snow.  If you are choosing to travel on steep slopes that may be wind-loaded  (most often at and above treeline), assess each slope carefully, and as always use safe travel techniques like riding one at a time.  There is  lot of phenomenal snow out there, and riders have great options lower in the terrain or on less steep slopes.

    Wind Slabs avalanches can occurr in terrain where the wind has blown snow from windward slopes (in this case SouthWest facing slopes) and packed it onto leeward slopes (in this case North, East, and maybe SouthEast).  If this snow overlays weaker snow than there is the potential for avalanches.

    Wind Slab assessment has been a bit tricky over the last week.  On some days we have received a lot of new snow with very little wind; other days have been very windy with lots of blowing snow and wind slabs building.  Most recently we've seen a bit of snow with periods of Moderate wind, and often conditions have varied between individual buttes and mountains.  Today at Tam Rim we observed very light unconsolidated storm snow with a stubborn wind slab lurking beneath.

    We've received a lot of snow in the last week, and seen some avalanche activity that surprised people.  It's a good time to be a little conservative and do some extra assessment before committing to big or consequential slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

The snow just keeps on falling, and the temperatures have stayed nice and cold.  It's looking like this trend will continue for the next few days at least.  I have been focusing my assessment on the upper snowpack, and it seems prudent to dig a little bit here and there as Dry Loose surface snow may give you a false sense of security.
