Avalanche danger will rise during the day with incoming snow. Watch for fresh slabs forming on the leeward slopes in wind affected terrain. Pay attention to changing weather conditions, heavy snow and strong winds are signs danger is rising be ready to dial back your terrain choices and adjust to these changing conditions. If you are causing cracking in the snow around your skis on steep slopes, that is a sign to turn around and find a lower angle route.

    If the forecast pans out, there will be 3 to 6 inches of snow accompanied by gusty winds blowing 20 to 30 mph. This will deposit fresh wind slabs on leeward slopes that will be sensitive to the weight of a rider. Most slabs will be less than a foot thick, but could be deeper in heavily wind affected areas. Steep slopes at middle and upper elevations are most suspect. Today, paying attention to changing conditions is the name of the game. If the weather is intensifying, then avalanche danger is on the rise.

Avalanche Discussion

The Salt and Wyoming Ranges are not expected to get the brunt of today's storm, but favored areas should get enough to improve travel conditions and put avalanches back on the menu. This week's weather is important to pay attention to because it is burying the weak snow that developed during the January Drought. This will influence snowpack stability going forward.

Very weak snow surfaces developed in many places, especially in sheltered areas that were not disturbed by wind, sunshine or ambient warm temperatures. While I don’t think these will pose a big problem today, they could be more of an issue as we get more snow. Areas that are treed and protected at the middle and some low elevations are where I am talking about. We usually think of these areas as safer, so keep your guard up and pay attention to how the new snow bonds to the old snow in these areas.
