Generally stable avalanche conditions exist. Expect a slick crust, and approach steep slopes with caution. Monitor the surface for warming and move to shadier or lower-angle terrain if it becomes unsupportable or slushy.

    Temperatures have been trending downward over the past couple of days, and surface crusts have been slower to soften. With today's cooler temperatures, gusty winds, and variable cloud cover, it's unlikely the snow will soften to a concerning degree. However, without a full-blown overnight freeze, it will remain important to monitor the surface for warming wherever you decide to travel. Starting and ending early is a great way to reduce the chance of encountering wet snow avalanches. Look out for slopes with fresh avalanche activity, and reduce your exposure to places with deep, wet snow at the surface. Move to shadier or less-steep terrain if the snow becomes unsupportable or slushy.

Avalanche Discussion

Today, many slopes will have firm, supportable snow that may feel slick as you travel. Expect these firm conditions to last as you gain elevation or travel on shaded aspects. It is a good day to consider bringing ski crampons, boot crampons, and an ice tool to reduce your vulnerability to a slip or fall, especially if you plan to travel in steep or complex terrain.

In your travels, continue to consider other springtime hazards. Creeks are running high, and snow bridges may not be trustworthy. Rockfall, cornice failures, and glide cracks have all been observed over the past week. Coverage is likely to be patchy or entirely absent at low elevations. Northerly aspects have the best coverage at all elevations, but below 8500 feet in the northern half of the forecast zone, snow cover is discontinuous. In the southern half, expect patchy coverage up to 9500 feet. Plan to spend some extra time on your ingress and egress, and consider bringing a pair of trail runners or a bike to help with longer approaches.

It remains a good time to find enjoyable, safe turns across the east side. Keep an open mind, your head on a swivel, and expect a variety of conditions today. Make a tour plan with multiple options, and use timing, aspect, and elevation as tools for success.
