Storm snow totals vary significantly throughout the forecast area. Avalanche danger is low overall but there may be isolated areas of unstable wind drifted snow near and above treeline on any aspect. If you are traveling in an area that received more than 6" of snow keep this in mind and assess the distribution, depth, and stability of this new snow if venturing into steep and consequential terrain. Also be on the lookout for unstable wet loose snow on steep sunny slopes near and below treeline.

    Many areas in the forecast zone did not receive enough new snow to increase avalanche hazard, but some areas received up to 6" with moderate to strong wind. NW flow produced a diverse distribution of local wind directions, so assess the loading pattern particular to your area of travel as any aspect may have been leeward during this storm. Areas above treeline may be completely scoured to the old snow surface, but observations were limited yesterday and some uncertainty exists. Use clues such as new cornice formations, newly formed drifts, snow surface texture and snow surface cracking to assess for wind slabs. Move around these areas with caution, or avoid all together, especially if in steep and consequential terrain.

    As we move into March the sun starts to become more influential. Above freezing temperatures today near and below treeline with stronger solar input increases the chances for wet loose avalanches in the new snow. These will be most likely on steep (>40 degrees) southerly-facing slopes, especially near cliffs and rocks where rock absorbs more of the sun's energy and heats the surrounding snow surface. Many south-facing slopes in the forecast area are melted down to bare ground, but it's prudent to start thinking of this problem as we head into spring and pay attention to it today if traveling on or below steep sunny slopes with more than 6" of new snow. Pinwheels and rollerballs are a telltale sign that wet surface snow is becoming unstable.
