You could still trigger a large avalanche on weak layers near the ground. Be wary of recently drifted snow on steep leeward slopes. Avalanches are less likely in simple terrain with deep uniform snow cover and slope angles less than 35 degrees.

    The persistent slab problem can challenge our patience. Sugary weak layers near the base of the snowpack have not gone away. Deliberate terrain choice is key to managing your exposure to a high-consequence problem that’s difficult to assess. Shooting cracks and collapses are red flags telling you to increase your safety margin. Because you can trigger persistent slabs from adjacent slopes, beware of what’s above you. Avoid steep and unsupported slopes, areas with shallow or variable snow cover, and rocky terrain.

    Tuesday, southwest wind drifted snow into stiff slabs on leeward slopes. The northern half of the forecast area saw the most blowing snow. Wind slabs typically take hours or days to heal. If you venture onto steep slopes below ridgelines or into chutes, be suspicious of rounded, textured drifts. These will be stiff and punchy. They may break in surprising ways: above you, or mid-slope. Even small slab avalanches can be dangerous above terrain traps. Softer snow and safer riding can be found in sheltered areas.

Avalanche Discussion

The last avalanche failing on basal facets ran on a northeast-facing slope above treeline last weekend. Some of the debris from that slide contained refrigerator-sized blocks. Monday, shooting cracks propagated across large areas near treeline in Rock Creek. Other feedback from the weak layer buried on December 1st has been more localized to shallow areas at the northern and southern ends of the region. All this points to a problem that might be difficult to spot but has the potential to be dangerous. 

While triggering a persistent slab avalanche has become more difficult, a resulting slide is likely to be large, breaking near the ground. If you choose to challenge yourself with bigger terrain, give yourself wide safety margins to limit your exposure.
