A warm storm will likely lead to dangerous avalanche conditions as mother nature throws the kitchen sink at Mt Hood with snow, rain, and even freezing rain at times through Friday.  Natural avalanches are possible during the stormiest periods.  Choose simple terrain without exposure to large open slopes at higher elevations.

    Heavy wet snow may change to rain at times Thursday night and Friday.  In areas where you find heavy wet snow,  see evidence of recent natural wet snow avalanches, or just experience a change from snow to rain, avoid slopes steeper than 35 degrees.  Avalanches may become large on slopes where they can entrain and gouge into the upper snowpack.  Wet snow avalanches can pack more of a punch than you'd expect so you'll want to be especially careful above and near terrain traps like gullies, cliff bands, holes and open creeks.

    Avoid complex terrain in areas where you find yourself sinking into wet snow or see evidence of wet snow avalanches.

    There's a lot of uncertainity regarding how Thursday night and Friday's storm will play out. You could find vastly different conditions not only with changes in elevation, but across different parts of the zone. 

    Avoid steep unsuppported slopes in any area experiencing heavy snow or if you see evidence of natural avalanches.  Upper elevations may see all snow during this storm along with strong winds.  Avoid large open slopes at upper elevations where slab avalanches would be larger and more deadly. 

    In areas where denser storm snow builds over recently buried weak snow,  you may trigger avalanches that break wider or from lower angle terrain than you'd expect.  Use an abundance of caution on Friday by choosing lower angle and generally sheltered slopes while the storm plays out.

Avalanche Discussion

The storm was beginning to ramp up Thursdy afternoon with snowfall rates of over an inch/hr at Mt Hood Meadows and Timberline as temperatures approached the freezing mark.  The next 24 hours could be wild both weather and avalanche-wise as warmer air to the west battles lower level and cooler E-SE flow.   Be prepared for a range of conditons, east to west and up and down across the zone.  Widespread surface hoar that formed earlier in the week up to 7000' may make avalanches more likely in some areas.  It's a good day to step back while things play out.   

The overall snowpack coverage has improved rapidly over the last few weeks, especially compared to last year!  Let us know what you see by submitting a public observation
