The danger will rise to MODERATE. You may be able to trigger small, soft slabs or drifts, which are most likely late in the day in windy upper elevations. Snowpack cracking is a clear sign that you've found unstable snow. The danger is higher in the western half of this zone, where more snow is expected. 

Dangerous avalanche conditions quickly develop as the storm continues overnight—be careful if you're out after dark.

    You could trigger thin wind slabs in exposed terrain. The slabs will grow thicker this afternoon and become more common as you climb in elevation. This problem is most pronounced in the western half of this zone near Dollarhide Summit and in the Soldier Mountains, where snow totals are greater. Some slabs will form on weak, sugary facets or crust + facet combinations; avalanches are easier to trigger in these areas and may break wider than expected. Some avalanches may release naturally late in the day or if the storm ramps up faster than expected.

    You can manage this problem by monitoring the depth of new snow and looking for and avoiding wind-loaded slopes. Fresh cornices, dunes, and rippled snow surfaces are clues that the wind has been at work. Cracks shooting out in front of your skis or boards mean you've found a sensitive wind slab.

Avalanche Discussion

A series of storms is on the doorstep, fueled by an atmospheric river in the Pacific. Today's danger will begin at LOW before sharply increasing due to heavy snowfall and wind this afternoon, evening, and through the day on Saturday.The west and southwest flow during the start of the storm will favor our western mountains, including the Soldiers and mountains near Dollarhide Summit. Avalanches involving this new snow will become a concern in windy areas as new snow accumulates this afternoon. Sensitive cornices and slabs of wind-blown snow will form near ridgelines. Expect some of these slabs to be touchy and break wider than expected. The chance of natural avalanches will increase as the storm ramps up late this afternoon and evening. 

We've enjoyed a prolonged stretch of fair weather and good stability, but that's about to change. January's drought, temperature swings, and high winds left us with a wide range of snow surfaces, many of which won't hold up well to a big storm. If you plan to be out late in the day or overnight, have a Plan B and be prepared to take a big step back as the storm intensifies.
