Lo esencial

Triggering a large avalanche is unlikely but not out of the question. Watch for rocky, wind-swept slopes with variable snowpack depths—these are the areas where slides are most likely to occur.

Avalanches are a bit more likely in the mountains near Smiley Creek and Galena Summit - also refer to the Galena Summit & Eastern Mtns zone forecast if you're traveling in the SE corner of this zone.

    Triggering a large, dense slab avalanche would require a bit of bad luck. Avalanches are easier to trigger in thin spots at the edges of slabs and wind-features. Watch for these proverbial land mines on the northern half of the compass, where the wind frequently blows, and the snowpack depth is variable. Many shady slopes in rocky alpine cirques fit that description. Some visual clues to identify suspect slopes:

    • Stiff or textured surfaces and wind-pillows, evidence the wind has moved snow  
    • Rocks sticking out of the snow, either near or well below ridgelines
    • Terrain where some part of the slope is at least 35 degrees in steepness

    If you do trigger an avalanche, you probably won't observe obvious signs of instability like snowpack collapsing or cracking beforehand. Any triggered avalanches have the potential to break above you. 

    Additional Discussion: You may encounter small, easy-to-trigger, wind slabs at middle and upper elevations, particularly in alpine terrain. Be on the lookout for wind-loaded features near ridgelines and along the sides of cross-loaded gullies. Shooting cracks are a clear indication of wind-transported snow.

    (12/31/2024) Triggering a large Persistent Slab avalanche like this one isn't out of the question in middle and upper-elevation terrain, especially in wind-affected areas or areas with a snowpack less than about 3 feet deep. N aspect near 9400' in the Beaver Ck drainage, Smoky Mtns. 

Avalanche Discussion

You are most likely to trigger avalanches where the upper 2 feet of the snowpack is stiff, and the weak layers are buried less than 3 feet deep. Your chances of triggering an avalanche are lower in areas where weak layers are buried deeper than about 3 feet or in sheltered terrain lacking a stiff upper snowpack. The conditions in the southeastern corner of this zone (Salmon River Headwaters, Frenchman Creek, and the mountains near the mouths of Smiley and Beaver Creeks) are more similar to those in the Galena Summit & Eastern Mtns zone

When you're playing in avalanche terrain, you can always stack the odds in your favor by avoiding slopes that end in terrain traps like thick trees, cliffs, and creek bottoms. You can further stack the odds by skiing or riding steep slopes one at a time.
