Friday should be a much cooler day, but as snow heats up in the spring sun, wet avalanches are possible. If you notice wet and heavy snow, move to lower angle or shadier terrain. Also, watch for overhead hazards such as cornices or rock slabs that may shed heavy chunks of snow onto the slopes below.

    We expect most wet avalanche activity to occur overnight during the rain. But with plenty of sun in the forecast, aspects on the southern side of the compass could still produce natural and triggered wet avalanches on steep slopes. If you can push snow and make rollerballs or small slides on small, steep test slopes, you should seek out lower angle or shady slopes. While wet loose avalanches will generally be small and predictable, they carry a lot of mass and can be difficult to get out of if they catch you. 

    Cornice falls and glide avalanches are less likely, but always an unpredictable hazard. Avoid traveling under overhanging cornices, open glide cracks, or cliffs still holding slabs of snow.

Avalanche Discussion

A sharp cooldown after Thursday night's storm is forecast, but this won't amount to much new snow since most of the precipitation will be of the liquid variety. If we're lucky, the highest elevations might pick up 1- 2 inches of snow. 

At upper elevation ridgelines, there might still be pockets of cold, dry snow on due north aspects. Any wind slabs are likely to be isolated and small, but heed warning signs, such as cracking or recent avalanches, by dialing back your terrain selection. Even small avalanches can be dangerous in consequential terrain. 

On Thursday, Stevens Pass ski patrol reported a superficial overnight re-freeze with small natural wet loose avalanches out of steep, rocky terrain. Over the past week, there have been reports of cornice failures and open glide cracks. The upper snowpack has transitioned to melt forms, but make sure to monitor how frozen these upper crusts are during the warmer days with limited overnight cooling. If you are punching deeply into wet snow, shed style avalanches from cornice falls, glide cracks, or rock slabs are more likely. 

The spring weather creates dynamic and variable snow conditions. Conditions at lower elevations may feel like full springtime, but as you climb into alpine terrain, you can quickly find a return to winter and dry snow problems. Travel with an assessment mindset and be prepared to assess conditions as they change with time, elevation, and aspect.
