There is a HIGH avalanche danger in the Kenai mountains due to snowfall and strong winds. Natural avalanches are likely and human triggered avalanches are very likely during and just after the storm. Avalanches could be very large and send debris into valley bottoms if they break in buried weak layers. This would be similar to what occurred during last Sunday's storm. Travel in avalanche terrain is NOT recommended.

    The storm over the region currently has peaked overnight and brought a few inches of snow to Summit Lake with a rain/snow line around 1,500'. Winds have been strong from the southeast for over a day now and are overloading slopes with buried weak layers. Because of this, natural large avalanches are expected. It was just a week ago during the last storm when many slopes and bowls avalanched, breaking in these weak layers. Even though this storm is less potent, we are still concerned it could produce large avalanches. 

    Once skies clear, it will be difficult to assess these buried weak layers. They are known for not showing any signs of instability and giving mixed results in snow stability tests, which can be misleading. The important thing to know moving forward is they just received another loading event and could be more reactive and easier for us to trigger a large and dangerous slab avalanche.

    Even though Summit Lake isn't seeing as much snow as Turnagain Pass, they are seeing the wind. Fresh wind slabs up to a foot deep have likely formed overnight and if they haven't avalanched on their own yet, they will be easy for a person to trigger. These wind slabs are not nearly as large and dangerous as the big avalanches mentioned above, but still something to keep in mind. The trick is these new wind slabs are often overlying slopes with buried weak layers. So, even if just a small wind slab is triggered it could result in a really bad situation if that small slab causes a deeper layer to fail, creating a large slide. 

    Cornices: During windy and snowy weather we often see cornices forming and failing. These cornices are a large enough hazard on their own, but they also have the potential to trigger a much larger avalanche on the slope below. This is one more reason to avoid avalanche terrain today.
