On Sunday in the Newberry Monument, it remains unlikely that there is enough snow for substantial avalanche activity, with current snow coverage proving to be unreasonable for off-trail travel at all but the upper most elevations of our zone. At these higher elevations is where you would find drifts with small pockets of unstable snow. Be aware that the consequence of going for a ride in a small slide is heightened with thin coverage due to exposed rocks and low trees.

    Although wind slab avalanches would likely be small, it is worth considering this problem if you are traveling in freshly wind blown snow at higher elevations. Below ridge tops on east facing slopes is where you may see cracking or small slab releases. Where wind slabs exist is also where travelers would likely find the best (perhaps only) sking and riding currently. Keep in mind that in addition to the high consequence of a slide in thin coverage, these drifts can be deceiving and result in non-avalanche related injuries if you are unable to recognize where they end. Nobody wants to hit a rock on their skis at full speed!
