Lo esencial

Steady snow and strong winds continued overnight.  Human triggered avalanches likely, and large natural avalanches very likely in the alpine.  Keep it to low angle tree zones today.

    After last weekends double whammy of D3 Deep persistent avalanches, high up on the crest's leeward slope. We havent seen anymore surface evidence of reactivity from this buried layer.  A couple of days of heavy snow and wind, should either get more reactivity out of this layer or pleasantly (possibly) put it to bed.  We weren't able to get high into the alpine (above tree line) yesterday during the storm, but with the amount of SWE and wind. The slopes are loaded. 

    We will be giving the suspected slopes a wide berth until we know better how they will respond with the new snowload.

    South West winds have been actively blowing and snowing for the past 40+ hours.  This new wind packed, fluctating temperature storm  layer has dropped over 4" of SWE in 2 days, and is interfacing on a surface crust layer from warmer temps from last weeks warm up.  Avoid steep, wind loaded slopes on leeward sides of ridges and cornices.  These wind slabs may be reactive and abundant above tree line on leeward catchments, near tree line locations will be more specifc and in isolated locations tucked below treeline.  

    Multiple recent rain crusts sandwiched between different wind and snow events this past week is making for an interesting layer cake of possible problematic slabs in the upper snowpack.

    As elevation was gained, short cracking became more and more common to see. Mitt pits and this shovel tilt showed it to be occurring right at the interface between the recent rain crust and the new, wind blown snow

Avalanche Discussion

  • Remember to establish a good plan with your backcountry team prior to leaving the trailhead.  Radios are an integral part of good travel communications, especially during storm days. 
  • Stick to familiar, low angle terrain during low visability/storm days.
