Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs and wet snow are to be assessed with care and prudence. In particular, however, the danger of moist and wet avalanches will increase from the early morning.

Wind slabs can be released by a single winter sport participant and reach large size in isolated cases. Along the border with France the avalanche prone locations are more prevalent and the danger is greater. Significant warming: On steep sunny slopes and at the base of rock walls the likelihood of dry and wet avalanches will increase during the day. In the typical avalanche paths the avalanches can as before reach fairly large size. The peak of avalanche activity will be reached in the course of the day probably, but already the late morning at low and intermediate altitudes.

Snowpack Structure

Here a lot of snow is lying for the time of year. In some regions 70 to 120 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Monday above approximately 1800 m. As a consequence of snowfall and the occasionally storm force northwesterly wind, snow drift accumulations formed during the last few days. This applies in particular in the regions exposed to the foehn wind above the tree line, and adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. In the vicinity of peaks snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. The new snow of last week is lying on surface hoar in some places above the tree line. In some places various wind slab layers are lying on the soft surface of an old snowpack. Sunny slopes below approximately 2500 m: The solar radiation will give rise as the day progresses to increasing moistening of the snowpack.

Tendency

The weather will be mild. The danger of dry and moist avalanches will increase a little during the day. In these regions, avalanche activity has already peaked.
