A lingering buried weak layer may still be capable of producing large avalanches on southerly, upper elevation slopes. Shooting cracks and whumphing collapses are signs that you should stay off, and out from underneath steep slopes. Conditions are still tricky for the time being. You may not get direct observations of instability, and the slope angle and aspect may need to be just right for an avalanche. Recent, human-triggered avalanches have slid on a smooth crust in the low 5000ft range. The main layer of concern, responsible for Sunday's close call, is a layer of small-grained, rounding facets above a sun crust buried on February 13th. This layer may be found about 2ft down from the snow surface in areas above 4500ft. Open, heavily wind loaded east to southeast aspects have been the bullseye for recent activity. Keep it simple by avoiding steep, open slopes on southerly aspects.
