Snowpack

The new snow from the period of precipitation from Wednesday to Friday is lying on a damp or hard surface, except on northern slopes in the high Alpine regions. In the south, the northerly wind transports the new snow and more wet loose snow avalanches are to be expected in these areas in the sunshine.

Although no human-triggered dry avalanches have been reported in the inneralpine regions of Grisons for some time, the snowpack still contains weak layers. When the snowpack initially becomes moist, these layers lose strength and fractures in the old snowpack become possible again. This currently mainly affects northern slopes between around 2400 and 2800 m.

The snowpack is water-saturated on southern slopes up to the high Alpine regions and on eastern and western slopes up to around 3000 m. On northern slopes, most of the snowpack is water-saturated up to around 2600 m.

Weather forecast to Friday

There will be precipitation in the north and east, falling as snow above approximately 1600 m. In the south and in Valais, after a partly clear night it will be sunny with northerly winds.

Fresh snow

From Thursday afternoon to Friday afternoon, the following amounts of new snow are expected above 2000 m:

• Northern flank of the Alps from the eastern Bernese Oberland to the Glarus Alps: 15 to 30 cm
• Remaining northern flank of the Alps, northern and central Grisons: up to 15 cm
• Elsewhere mostly dry.

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, around 0 °C in the north and +4 °C in the south

Wind

• Light to moderate from the west in the north, turning to north during the day
• Moderate to strong northerly winds on the Main Alpine Ridge and south of it, sometimes strong foehn wind from the north in the valleys of the south

Weather review for Thursday

There was widespread precipitation during the night into Thursday, but only in the north and east during the day. The snowfall level was around 1800 m in the evening and dropped to 1500 m during the night. In Upper Valais and in the south, it was mostly sunny with northerly winds from the early morning.

Fresh snow

From Wednesday afternoon to Thursday afternoon, the following amounts fell above 2200 m:

• Main Alpine Ridge from Obergoms to the Corvatsch area: 20 to 40 cm, in Moesano up to 50 cm
• Extreme west of Lower Valais, northern flank of the Alps from the eastern Bernese Oberland to the Alpstein region, central Grisons: 10 to 20 cm
• less elsewhere

Temperature

At midday at 2000 m, around 0 °C in the north and +4 °C in the south

Wind

• Light to moderate westerly wind in the north
• Moderate along the Main Alpine Ridge and south of it, occasionally strong from the north during the night

OutlookSaturday

After a clear night, it will be sunny in the mountains. Winds will be mostly light. The zero-degree level will rise to around 2600 m.

The danger of dry avalanches will decrease. The danger of wet avalanches will increase during the day as a consequence of warming and solar radiation, this increase being significant in the north.

Sunday

Some precipitation will fall on the Main Alpine Ridge and south of it during the night into Sunday, falling as snow above 2000 m. In the north, after a mostly clear night it will be partly sunny and partly cloudy with localised showers. There will be a light wind and the zero-degree level will be at 2600 m.

The danger of dry avalanches will increase slightly in the south and on the Main Alpine Ridge in Upper Valais, otherwise it will hardly change. The danger of wet avalanches will increase during the day as a consequence of solar radiation.
