Avalanche Activity

CM for 23/03/23 New weak windslab N to E aspects above 900m. New fragile cornices. Avalanche Hazard - Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Weakly stabilised windslab expected to become more widespread on steep North to East aspects above 900 metres. New fragile cornice development anticipated over steeper lee slopes. Good stability on all recently wind-scoured locations. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers continuing overnight and during the day on Thursday. Strong South-West winds. Cold initially, with freezing level rising to near summits later in the day. Observed Weather Influences: Overnight rain and mild temperatures. Colder from the early hours with persistent snow showers extending into the early afternoon. Less cold later. Gale to storm-force South West winds. ObservedSnowStability: Humid marginally bonded windslab has built, but only on very sheltered North to East aspects above 950 metres. Strong local counter winds induced some lee slope scouring in selected locations. Frequent spindrift avalanches observed on steep North-East facing crags in the Inner Coire of Coire Ardair. New minor cornice development noted above steepest lee slopes. Elsewhere the patchy, old, scoured snowpack is either moist or refrozen but stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
