Avalanche Activity

GC for11/1. Fresh unstable windslab mainly on N-E-SE aspects above 850m. Older snowpack stable. Fragile cornices. Moderate hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: At the start of the period, as the temperature falls, the wet snowpack present will consolidate and become generally stable. Fresh accumulations of unstable windslab will develop through the period mainly in wind sheltered locations on North through East to South-East aspects above 850 metres. Fresh fragile cornices will start to build above these aspects. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Gale force West-South-West winds will back to become South-Westerly and ease slightly during the day. Showers throughout the period, initially falling as snow only on the highest summits, will soon turn to snow above 700 metres. The freezing level will initially be above the summits, dropping to around 800 metres through the evening and then remaining there. Observed Weather Influences: Snow above around 700 metres in the morning soon turned to rain at all levels. Very strong Southerly winds. The freezing level rose above the summits during the day. ObservedSnowStability: Wet snow instabilities are present mainly on steep North through East to South aspects above 900 metres. On other aspects and at lower elevations the snowpack is generally stable. Cornices are prone to collapse. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
