Avalanche Activity

The fresh snow and very particularly the wind slabs represent the main danger. These are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility.

The southeasterly wind has transported the new snow. The mostly small wind slabs of Wednesday will be covered with new snow and therefore barely recognisable. As a consequence of new snow and a moderate wind from southwesterly directions, wind slabs will form in the course of the day adjacent to ridgelines and in pass areas as well as above the tree line. They can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, in all aspects. In particular at high altitudes and in high Alpine regions these avalanche prone locations are more widespread and the danger is slightly greater. Afternoon: As a consequence of the solar radiation, the likelihood of dry and moist avalanches being released will increase, in particular on very steep sunny slopes, and on wind-loaded slopes. In particular here the avalanches can reach medium size.

Snowpack Structure

10 to 20 cm of snow, and up to 30 cm in some localities, fell on Wednesday above approximately 2000 m, in particular along the border with Switzerland. Thursday: 10 to 20 cm of snow will fall until the afternoon above approximately 1500 m. In some places new snow and wind slabs are lying on soft layers. A lot of snow is lying at intermediate and high altitudes. The old snowpack is favourably layered.

Tendency

The avalanche danger will persist.
