Central Sierra Nevada

Sunny and warmer conditions are forecasted for today.  Wet snow is expected to form on sun exposed slopes as daytime warming occurs with limited impacts to backcountry users.  Avalanches remain unlikely today, normal caution is advised. 

Gale force Northeast winds yesterday transported snow along exposed ridges and peaks.  Small pockets of wind slab could have formed in isolated areas where limited snow was available for wind transport.  Winds shifted overnight to the West and are expected to be in the light to moderate range today.

Sunny skies and warming temperatures are expected through Friday with temperature inversions increasing through the week.  Wet snow is expected to develop today on sun exposed slopes as daytime warming occurs.  Small roller balls, pinwheels, and wet snow instabilities could occur as the snow surface crusts melt away and lose strength.  Wet snow instabilities are expected to remain small today.

Firm snow and variable snow surface conditions exist in near and above treeline areas.  Sliding falls or runaway equipment/snowmobiles are possible on a variety of aspects in exposed areas due to the firm snow conditions. Opt for shaded below treeline slopes to avoid this possibility and to seek out better snow surface conditions.  Use best practice travel techniques such as carrying avalanche safety gear, only exposing one person at a time when traveling in steep terrain, and regrouping in safe zones away from avalanche terrain.
