Lo esencial

Avalanches are unlikely on Saturday.  The rain on January 1 really did a number on our snowpack.  Cooling temperatures will limit the amount of weak snow (and soft snow) throughout the terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

Between the warm sunny days earlier in the week, and then significant rain on January 1 we lost a bit of snow.  Our weather station just above Paulina Lake was measuring over 15 inches last Saturday and is now recording just above 10 inches.  On Friday, the snow was pretty wet all the way up to about 7,200 ft.  At higher elevations, I found a thick rain crust.  While the rain often leads to avalanches while it's raining, now that it is over and the temperatures are cooling down, I expect any wet instabilities to be coming to an end.  Forecasts aren't calling for enough new snow on Saturday to create any new avalanche problems.
