Lo esencial

Heavy snowfall and extreme winds will result in large avalanches being likely in the Newberry zone on slopes where the wind is depositing snow. Smaller avalanches are still likely on sheltered slopes not effected by the wind. Travel in avalanche terrain is not recommended for Sunday. If you choose to recreate in the snow, do so on slopes less than 30 degrees, and minimize exposure below steep, open slopes.

    Steady, strong to extreme winds from the SW and West will accompany the heavy snowfall overnight and through Sunday. This will result in significant movement of large amounts of snow, with redeposition packing these new snow grains into large consolidated slabs. This will mostly be present on North - East aspects, but with these forecasted snow amounts a wider safety margin should be utilized. Keep in mind that extreme winds tend to create unusual loading patterns and we sometimes find wind slabs further downslope and even in open glades below treeline. Newberry in particular has many open slopes below treeline that are steep enough to avalanche, especially around the obsidian flow. Look for signs of actively blowing snow and rippled snow surface textures to better understand where this wind slab problem exists.

    Dry loose avalanches will be likely on Sunday in steep, sheltered terrain at lower elevations. The high precipitation rate throughout the day will result in an abundance of new snow that lacks time to settle. These avalanches will mostly be small but they can still be dangerous, especially on long sustained slopes and around terrain traps. Keep an eye on the terrain below you.  Getting knocked off your feet and pushed down steep slopes over cliffs or into trees and rocks can make smaller avalanches have a very bad outcome.
