Mild temperatures will maintain the threat of destructive wet avalanches (slab and wet loose). Over the last 48 hours, the snowpack has absorbed over 2.5 inches of rain. Warm temperatures on Tuesday will only keep the water moving through the snowpack. While it may feel like a nice spring day, don’t approach terrain like it's a stable, spring snowpack - because it's far from it. Wet loose avalanches are often considered to be more manageable, but don't be surprised if these are easy to trigger in steep terrain and grow large quickly. They could be triggers to larger wet slab avalanches in the right (or wrong) spot.
Prior to this atmospheric river, we saw over 70 inches of new snow and importantly, a pattern of widely propagating, large ( to very large) avalanches around Mt Hood. We’re unsure what these large avalanches failed on, but these weak layers could be layers that wet slab avalanches fail on. It's not often that we head into a rain event with so much new snow and documented slab activity, so ease out of this period with caution until the meltwater production shuts off with a proper refreeze later this week.
It won't be the day to test your luck around steep terrain. Wet snow avalanches tend to be hard to predict and forecast and often release without warning. Until cooler temperatures arrive, consider keeping your terrain selection simple by avoiding steep terrain and limiting your time under bigger terrain, which includes upper canyon run-outs that larger avalanches snake through every season.
Additional Discussion:
Sagging cornices and glide cracks may exist across the zone. Give these chunks of snow and frowning cracks a wide buffer.
