Avalanche activity is unlikely today. Isolated warming instability in the form of pinwheels, roller balls, and small wet loose avalanches may be possible during the hottest temperatures of the day. To avoid this issue, assess warming solar slopes before entering. Cloud cover will build this afternoon, and precipitation will begin to fall this evening.

    Today, wet loose avalanches are possible on W-SW-S-SE-E aspects below and near treeline. This problem will diminish in likelihood as weather begins to change this afternoon. By this evening, a cooling trend will take place with new snow expected, effectively squashing the wet loose issue. Until then, keep your eye out for signs of a warming snowpack such as roller balls, increasing boot penetration, and small point release wet loose avalanches. If triggered, these slides have the potential to entrain snow for hundreds of feet. While these avalanches may not be large enough to bury a person, the heavy, wet debris can easily knock someone off their feet and send them into hazardous terrain. The best way to combat this issue is to avoid solar slopes before peak daytime temperatures. 

Avalanche Discussion

After five days of increasingly warm temperatures, field observations have yet to show significant wet loose activity. Yesterday, forecasters traveled up Green Butte Ridge in search of warming instability on solar aspects. Three to eight inches of soft wet grains were found on top of a very firm layer below. Stickier snow was found at lower elevations (<7,300 feet). Test slopes showed no signs of instability.

Similarly, an observation from upper Old Ski Bowl described very firm conditions till 11 am, providing good skiing and marginal snowmobiling.

Tonight, an incoming low pressure system will bring precipitation back to the region. Five to eight inches of new snow is expected by tomorrow midday.
