You could find wind drifted snow on and around features at mid to upper elevations on Tuesday. It is possible that you could trigger an avalanche in these heavier drifts. Steer around thicker deposits on slopes steeper than 35 degrees, especially when you notice obvious clues such as cracking occurring as you travel across a slope.

    A few inches of snow is expected to fall Monday night, and new snow with moderate winds means we could find some freshly built wind slabs. Search for these unstable pockets of snow on the leeward side of ridgelines, convex features, or in featured terrain such as the base of cliffs and confined chutes. You could encounter some unusual loading patterns with slabs forming on aspects you’re not used to or more cross-loading than usual. Continue to search for signs of actively loading snow throughout Tuesday, by identifying blowing snow or fresh drifts to help you determine where wind-loaded features are for you to avoid.

    Wind-loaded test slopes produced cracking and showed slab character on Kendall Peak a few days back. This is a good indication that human triggered wind slabs were possible on larger slopes. This is similar to conditions you might find on Tuesday.

Avalanche Discussion

All aspects aside from north saw sun and moistened on Easter Sunday. Temperatures have since remained mild, but Monday night we're expecting to see a few inches of snow and cooling temperatures. The previously moist southerly surfaces are probably now a crust. In some areas, the few inches of new snow may cling to the crust, but in more exposed areas the new snow could blow away in the wind. The crust is challenging to travel over, as the smooth surface could be slippery. Steeper crusty surfaces may be textured with rollerballs and wet loose avalanche debris- not the most pleasant surface to move over. 

The surface the new snow sits over could help drive the size and likelihood of you triggering a slide. Take a moment to check the bonding of the storm snow to the old surface before committing to a slope. A crust could make an excellent sliding surface for any wind drifted pockets that deposit on the crust.  We anticipate most avalanches to be isolated to the new accumulation, but on those shadier slopes we could see some avalanches break into older layers. There is currently 2-2.5 feet of snow sitting above the 4/8 interface which is the maximum depth, however unlikely, that we expect any avalanches could step down to currently.
