Rollerballs coming from rocky chutes are warning signs that wet loose avalanches are becoming a hazard. Move to shady aspects as the surface snow becomes wet. Use caution below ridgelines and in cross-loaded gullies where you could still trigger slabs of drifted snow. Limit your exposure to big cornices overhead or underfoot.

    Temperatures are forecast to climb above freezing this afternoon. If warming meets or exceeds expectations, watch for rollerballs and small sluffs on solar aspects as the first sign that wet loose avalanches are becoming likely. Rocky chutes, vegetated slopes, and areas with shallow snow cover will warm first and most. Plan your day to be out from under very steep southerly slopes as the sun thaws the surface.

    Soft, small wind slabs rest atop low-density snow and crusts. Cornices loom over some high-elevation ridgelines. Though slabs have gradually been stabilizing, warming may make them stiffer and easier to trigger in the short term. They’ll be largest from Mammoth north, where the most snow fell on Sunday. Watch for cracking in dense drifts under your boards or snow machine. Treat steep terrain below ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gullies, and cross-loaded depressions with caution. Cornices are their own hazard. Especially if they break beneath you or tumble down the slope above you. Limit your exposure to white waves looming over leeward slopes.

    A large natural wind slab avalanche in Bishop Creek

Avalanche Discussion

Small natural and human-triggered loose dry avalanches were reported across the region each day since Monday. Riders reported cracking in small, soft wind slabs and small cornice failures yesterday.

Low-density, incohesive snow fell Sunday and Monday. Very cold temperatures have slowed settlement and bonding at the surface. Despite clear skies and warming yesterday, surfaces remained dry. Warming today could be the first time cold snow becomes wet. Recent snow rests atop old hard wind and sun crusts in exposed areas, which will be good sliding surfaces. 

In sheltered terrain, weak faceted snow lies underneath. The mid-pack is generally strong and right-side up. The snowpack is deep with the exception of lower elevations in the southern part of the forecast zone where snow depths are between 3 and 5 feet. Warmer temperatures may begin to consolidate soft snow in the upper pack.
