Avalanche Activity

TO 1.1.25 New windslab and cornices on S, SW and W asp above 900 metres. Older snow will be firm and icy. Avalanche Hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised windslab and cornices will develop rapidly in wind sheltered locations on South to West aspects above 900 metres. These accumulations will contain weaknesses where they achieve depth and overlie the existing snow cover, especially in steep terrain such as gully tops and ridge flanks. Other sheltered locations may also be affected due to cross loading. The remaining snow patches will become firm in the cooler conditions. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Gale force South-Westerlies will ease and veer during the night to become very strong, occasionally gale force Northerlies. For the first part of the night the freezing level will remain above the summits with further rainfall which will turn to snow as the freezing level lowers steadily to finish at glen level by the end of the day. Observed Weather Influences: Snowfall overnight was followed by heavy rain at all levels. The freezing level was above the highest summits. Gale force South-Westerlies. ObservedSnowStability: The fresh snow, lying mostly on bare ground rapidly thawed and diminished in the mild wet conditions. The remaining snow deposits are soft and wet, with the greatest accumulations to be found on North to East aspects above 900 metres. Localised wet snow instabilities are present in steep wind sheltered locations such as coire rims and gully tops. The avalanche hazard is Low.
