Lo esencial

At upper elevations active E-NE winds have transported snow onto leeward S-SW aspects creating the potential for isolated pockets of wind slab. Recent cold temperatures have solidified the snowpack on all aspects and elevations, with slick and firm surfaces hosting slip and fall conditions near and above treeline.  Avalanches remain unlikely, and normal caution is recommended for travel in the backcountry.

    1–1.5

With diminished signs of instability and homogenous conditions, the wind has still found means of transporting snow near and above treeline. Remain suspect of leeward slopes at upper elevations and use best practices to help widen your margin of safety.

    (1/30/2023)

Northeast winds have been consistently moving snow around at upper elevations

Avalanche Discussion

A solidified snowpack can still be dangerous if users are unprepared or ill-equipped. Set yourself up for success by matching your ability to the conditions and knowing what safety gear to carry and how to use it.

  • The Everitt Memorial Highway is OPEN. Castle Lake road is still CLOSED, but next for clearing
