Mountain temperatures are a few degrees warmer than yesterday morning. At the mid and upper elevations, backcountry travelers venturing onto steep, avalanche-prone slopes could trigger recently developed wind slabs with greatly varying depths. As the day progresses, daytime warming, abundant sunshine and the absence of strong winds will all combine to heat snow surfaces and increase the likelihood of triggering these slides. This warming will be most significant on sunlit aspects, and wet loose sluffing will be likely in the afternoon. The likelihood of cornice failures will also increase in the afternoon. Monitor the extent to which the surface of the snowpack is heating up, and seek out shaded terrain when snow surfaces become damp or crusts begin to break down. The lower elevation snowpack is mostly stable this morning, but the chance for wet slides could return in the afternoon.

    Over all, diurnal warming and cooling cycles over the past couple of days have decreased the likelihood of triggering recently developed wind slabs. The trend of decreasing hazard overnight and increasing hazard during the heat of the day will continue. On a variety of aspects at the mid and upper elevations, skiers and riders could trigger recently developed wind slabs. These slabs could fail on density breaks or graupel layers within the recent snowfall. Faceted snow from January can also be found in some areas. This scenario results in slab depths ranging anywhere from six inches to four feet. In the afternoon, the chance of natural activity will return.

Avalanche Discussion

Another day of sunny and warm temperatures are expected for Wednesday. Below freezing temperatures are expected at all elevations in the morning. Highs above freezing are expected on summits again with the warmest conditions expected in sunlit basins near 9000 feet. At low elevations temperatures are to again rise into the thirties.The avalanche danger will increase tomorrow as warming occurs. Slabs formed during last weeks storm will be most susceptible to failure at the high elevations, where weak layers are most buried and preserved. These slabs have the potential to be large. Wet loose and wet slab activity may also become possible tomorrow afternoon, particularly at mid elevations where snow under the surface crust remains warm from recent rain. As opposed to last week, when low elevations held the weakest snow, cold temperatures have bonded the upper portion of the rain soaked snowpack and avalanches are unlikely except in areas where excessive warming occurs. The rating will the Moderate at high elevations, and will rise from Low to Moderate below 9000 feet.
