New snow and elevated winds will arrive this morning, tacking more weight onto the recently added three feet of snow. Expect avalanche danger to rise throughout the day. Look out for wind loaded slopes near and above treeline, where human triggered avalanches are possible. These avalanches could break fairly deep and wide. Below treeline, much of the danger has been removed by quick settlement and warm temperatures. However, keep your eyes peeled for signs of instability.

    Evidence of extreme wind transport is everywhere. Any exposed areas below, near, and above treeline has wind texture, and scoured surfaces. The snow has been transported on to north through west aspects, with cross loading possible on northeast and southerly aspects. As winds and new snow ramp up again today and tonight, expect this problem to rise significantly. These avalanches could be large, and can bury you. Assess any wind loaded avalanche terrain near and above treeline before considering travel.

    Majority of this problem was squished with the warm temperatures yesterday. However, with 8 inches or more of new snow by tomorrow, this problem will be on the rise as snow begins to fall. Storm slab could be found on any slope where new snow is accumulating. 

Avalanche Discussion

At this moment, the next storm system is at our doorstep, and current avalanche danger has dropped considerably from yesterday. Looking at the forecast, it may appear like a green light to charge up Mount Shasta and ski steep slopes before this storm intensifies. This is not advised. The sheer volume of new snow, the high precip intensity, and obvious signs of leeward wind loading keep the possibility of triggering a deep wind slab avalanche at high elevations. If you choose to step-out into avalanche terrain today, maintain a healthy suspicion of west through north aspects, where wind loading has occurred and shade has kept temperatures from rising. Keep track of the approaching weather, and new snow. Expect visibility to be poor.

  • Everitt Memorial Highway is CLOSED. The gate is closed this morning. 
  • Castle Lake road is CLOSED
