Lo esencial

As the day warms up we will have some changing conditions that will lead to the possibility of natural cornice breaks and triggering loose snow avalanches. Triggering an avalanche in wind deposited snow will still be possible on Saturday near and above treeline. It will be wise not to linger under cornices and avoid stepping out onto them. Evaluate previously wind loaded slopes before committing to them, and remember avalanches can have more consequence in steep terrain and above terrain traps.

    I did not observe any reactive wind slabs today, but there is a lot of terrain out there. Keep wind slabs in mind on Saturday if you venture into the high country. As the winds are backing off, we probably won't see much new wind loading but there could be some pockets of wind slab that can still be triggered. Look for wind slabs below ridges, peaks, and around any features that catch blowing snow. Evaluate slopes that have been wind loaded before committing to steep terrain and on slopes above terrain traps.

    Wind slabs can show up in places like clearings and areas with sparse or dead trees at lower elevations. These areas can accumulate enough blowing snow to be a concern for wind slab avalanches. 

  • Cornices

    With warmer temperatures on Saturday we could see some natural cornice breaks. Cornices have been growing over the last week and there are some big overhangs out there. Avoid stepping out onto a cornice and don't linger underneath them. 

    Similar to wind slabs, cornice can show up in isolated areas below treeline around exposed ridges, burned areas, and other features that are open enough to allow for large amounts of blowing snow. 

  • Loose Wet

    Low elevation terrain will experience a big warm up on Saturday causing surface snow to become wet and heavy. Mid elevation slopes in the sun may also warm up enough to bring on wet loose avalanches. If you find the snow surface becoming wet and slushy to ankle deep or deeper,  or if you observe rollerballs coming down, recognize these as precursory signs of wet loose avalanches. Wet loose avalanches will be more of a concern in steep terrain and above terrain traps such as cliffs, gully features. 

    Although less likely, wet slabs could come into play at lower elevations.
