Lo esencial

Pockets of wind-drifted snow can be found on south and east-facing slopes at middle elevations, which may pose a risk for human-triggered avalanches. Otherwise, generally stable avalanche conditions exist and large avalanches are unlikely. Staying on firm and supportable snow surfaces will decrease the risk of being caught in an avalanche.

    Firm, supportive wind impacted snow is the primary snow surface at middle and upper elevations. Pockets of wind slab under 12 inches thick at middle elevations are trending stubborn after two days of temperatures in the high 20s F. These small slabs are limited in distribution and are most likely found on south and southeast aspects tucked behind ridgelines and rock/tree outcrops. The smooth snow may look inviting, but stability should be investigated before committing. Though small, they may be large enough to knock you off your feet and send you down the slope.

    At lower elevations, deeper pockets of soft snow have been observed high in the terrain. These pockets are increasing in stability from warming temperatures but the chance for triggering a small avalanche in steep, consequential terrain should be on your radar.

Despite LOW danger, no mountain environment is without risk. Continue to make deliberate and informed travel decisions. As always, if something doesn't feel right, don't be afraid to back off and return another day.

The Lion Head Summer Trail is CLOSED due to increased avalanche hazard. The Lion Head Winter Route is OPEN and the most direct route to the Mount Washington Summit from Pinkham Notch.
