Lo esencial

Upper elevation winds combined with sunny spring like warm temperatures will make route finding and timing a factor today.   Human triggered- isolated wind slabs and wet loose avalanches are possible.  If traveling in avalanche terrain, make a plan and as temperatures rise through out the day, stay aware and act accordingly.

    This weeks temperatures will rise and be above freezing at most aspects and elevations in the Below Treeline and Near Treeline during daytime hours.   As temperatures rise and radiation on solar aspects increases throughout the day. Pay attention to loose wet instabilities like roller balls, pinwheels and wet sluff.  These point release avalanches can push you into unfavorable and consequential terrain if caught.  Temperatures will increase throughout the week, effecting all aspects and elevations, but be especially aware of these temps and how quickly south-solar exposures soften during direct sunlight hours.

    NE winds have been predominant the past few days at upper elevations and will continue throughout the week. Most, if not all snow at these elevations have been affected.  We are leaving wind slab on the problems list today, as breakable slabs in isolated terrain is possible. With that being said most of the snow is "wind hammered" non breakable wind board.   Also be careful for non edgeable, hard, slide for life conditions in steeper terrain.

Avalanche Discussion

  • Diurnal (day and night) melt freeze cycle is in effect.  Good "corn" skiing is a result of this.  Timing is key. On slope too early and ice conditions will be encountered. Too late and slushy it will be.  This is also the time Wet Loose avalanche triggering is possible.
  • Upper elevations are very wind scoured. Finding soft, cold edgeable snow may still be possible on protected NW aspects and in the trees. Any exposed terrain is likely wind effected and that snow has blown into the ether, not redeposited onto slopes. Solar exposures are mostly "locked up" from wind and sun exposure.
  • Please submit observations of your findings. Take pictures and explain aspect and elevation.
