Avalanche Activity

TO for 15/3. Fresh unstable windslab mainly on N to NE aspects above 800m in afternoon. Old snowpack generally stable. Mod Hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised accumulations of fresh unstable windslab will develop in wind sheltered locations, mainly on North and North-East aspects above 800 metres. This will mostly effect the more coastal mountains in the afternoon with less snow expected further inland. The older snowpack will remain generally well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Moderate West-South-West winds initially soon become strong and back South-South-Westerly. Showers, falling as snow above around 600 metres, will be heaviest in the West of the area in the afternoon. The freezing level will drop to around 700 metres overnight, rising slightly through the day. Observed Weather Influences: It was a dry day with moderate Southerly winds. The freezing level was around 1100 metres. ObservedSnowStability: The snowpack is generally well bonded and stable. Typical spring snow conditions with the snow surface becoming firm overnight and softening during the day. The avalanche hazard is Low.
