Avalanche Activity

SC 08.04 Unstable windslab will persist in lee locations on SE to SW aspects above 900m. Avalanche hazard Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab will persist in wind sheltered locations mainly on South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. Stability will be poorest on scarp slopes, gully tops and on steep convex features. Elsewhere deep drifts will be encountered in lee locations above 600 metres with older snow very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers at all levels, mainly overnight and later in the afternoon. Strong to near gale force winds from the North-North-West throughout. Observed Weather Influences: Heavy snow showers first thing but these eased late morning. Winds were very strong from the North, storm force at times but started to ease later. ObservedSnowStability: Localised accumulations of unstable windslab have formed only in very wind sheltered locations on South-East to South-West aspects above 900 metres. These accumulations are not widespread in distribution but have depth and demonstrate poor stability, particularly on steep terrain. Isolated deeper drifts are also found in lee locations at lower levels. Elsewhere, wind exposed terrain is scoured with old snow very firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
