Avalanche Activity

GC 20.2 Poor instability overnight on NW to SE aspects above 800m. Unstable cornices on similar aspects. Av Hazard Considerable.

Forecast Snow Stability: Poor instability overnight, locations most affected will be North-West through East to South-East aspects above 800 metres, where avalanches are likely. Fragile cornices will be prone to collapse. As colder conditions start to take affect, the moist snow pack will start to refreeze. Shallow accumulations of windslab will develop mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 800 metres in wind sheltered locations. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Overnight the freezing level will rise above the summits with heavy precipitation falling mainly as rain on all but the highest tops. During the day it will become showery, with the freezing level dropping steadily to 400 metres by the end of the forecasting period. South-Westerly winds strengthening to gale force, and veering to the West. Observed Weather Influences: A dry and bright day. The freezing level was around 450 metres. Light Westerly winds. ObservedSnowStability: Windslab instabilities persist mainly on North-East to South Easterly aspects above 800 metres. Areas most affected are wind sheltered locations, localised windslab instabilities also exist on North and South aspects above 800 metres. Fragile cornices are present above the same aspects. Icy crust in some wind exposed locations. Better stability at lower elevations. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
