Avalanche Activity

GC6/1 New snow+strong S winds localised areas of unstable windslab mainly NW-N-NE aspects and sheltered gullies 800 m+ Haz Moderate.

Forecast Snow Stability: New snow and wind transport of existing deposits will form localised areas of unstable windslab in wind sheltered locations mainly on North-West through North to North-Easterly aspects above 850 metres. Gully exits, corrie headwalls and areas where older hard snow exist will be most affected. Fresh cornices will be fragile. The patchy older snowpack will remain stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: New snow on the higher slopes through the day and strong generally Southerly winds will affect the area. The freezing level will initially be around 400 metres rising to 1000 metres in the afternoon before falling to 600 metres by evening. Observed Weather Influences: Colder dry conditions have affected the area. Winds have been moderate to fresh North-Westerly. The freezing level was around 400 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Localised areas of moderately bonded windslab are present in wind sheltered locations mainly on North-East through East to South aspects above 800 metres. These are generally shallow and avoidable. At lower elevations there is a thin covering of soft unconsolidated snow. The older patchy snowpack is frozen and stable. The avalanche hazard is Low.
