Avalanche Activity

Snowdrift problem comes to the foreground

Avalanche danger above 1500m is moderate, below that altitude danger is low. At high altitudes, snowdrifts are the main problem. One sole person can trigger an avalanches in steep ridgeline terrain in NW/N/SE aspects and in wind-loaded gullies and bowls. Slab avalanches can reach medium size. At intermediate altitudes, in addition, wet-snow is problematic. On steep slopes which have not yet discharged, isolated wet loose-snow avalanches and glide-snow avalanches can trigger. Glide-cracks are indicators of imminent danger. Avalanches of large size cannot be ruled out.

Snowpack Structure

The shower-like precipiation and fresh snow is being transported by strong westerly winds, new snowdrift accumulations are being generated near ridgelines. Above 1500 m more snowfall is expected. There are weak layers embedded inside the new snowdrifts. Elsewhere the fresh snow was able to bond with the old snowpack. Below 1500m the snowpack is much reduced.

Tendency

Fresh snow and drifts will ratchet up avalanche danger at the start of the new week.
