A generally favourable avalanche situation will prevail.

Individual avalanche prone locations for dry avalanches are to be found in particular in extremely steep terrain. In isolated cases avalanches can be triggered in the weakly bonded old snow. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.

Snowpack On very steep south facing slopes a strong crust will form during the night up to high altitudes. On shady slopes the surface of the snowpack is mostly brittle. Only on wind-protected shady slopes at high altitudes is powdery snow still to be found sometimes. Solar radiation and warming during the day will weaken the snowpack. On steep sunny slopes in particular, wet snow and gliding avalanches can occur as the day progresses. In particular in southern Valais and in Grisons, wet slab avalanches can be released in isolated cases, including by people, because of the poor bonding of the snowpack. Faceted and loosely bonded layers exist deeper in the snowpack over a wide area. On the northern flank of the Alps, these layers are often to be found near the surface of the snowpack; in southern Valais and in Grisons, the entire snowpack is faceted and loosely bonded in some cases. The snow depths are well below average. On the flat sites occupied by the measuring stations, the recorded values are as much as one to two-thirds lower than usual. Weather forecast through Tuesday, 21.02.2023 On Monday night the skies will be mostly clear. In the eastern part of the northern flank of the Alps and in Grisons, the outgoing longwave radiation will be reduced by high-altitude cloud during the first half of the night. During the day it will be mostly sunny and exceptionally mild again for the time of year. Fresh snow - Temperature At midday at 2000 m: between +7 °C in the west and south, and +5 °C in the east Wind Light Outlook through Thursday, 23.02.2023 Wednesday On Tuesday night, cloud will build up from the west and the skies will be only partly clear. In the morning, it will be quite sunny again. During the day, cloud will build up from the west and light precipitation will commence; in the east it will remain sunny and dry for a longer period. Temperatures will fall a little. The zero degree level will drop to 2000 m by the evening. Under the influence of the reduced outgoing longwave radiation, the danger of wet snow avalanches will increase a little more quickly as the day progresses. Thursday On Wednesday night and during Thursday, there is likely to be variable to dense cloud cover with a little precipitation at times. The snowfall level will be approximately 1500 m. As a consequence of snowfall, the danger of dry avalanches will increase a little. The danger of wet snow avalanches will change very little.
