You can trigger an avalanche on any steep slope with more than about 8 inches of new or wind-drifted snow. The most hazardous slopes are at high elevations facing north through east to south, where winds drift snow. Bulbous pillows of firm, hollow snow may crack and collapse under your weight. Snow drifts are most likely found beneath corniced ridges and in the tops and sides of gullies. On steep slopes with soft snow, fast-running sluffs could knock you off your feet. You can find safer riding in areas with soft snow unaffected by the wind and on lower-angled slopes.
