Lo esencial

An approaching storm looks to bring increased east winds and snow throughout the day. If the winds arrive sooner than expected, small wind slabs will be the main concern at upper elevations. Otherwise, look out for older wind slabs and glide cracks releasing as avalanches. Give cornices a wide berth and watch for dry loose avalanches on steep slopes.

The avalanche danger is expected  to rise as the storm is forecast to become more intense Sunday into Monday evening.

    The avalanche danger is expected to rise as our first storm of the New Year is forecast to arrive today. If the weather verifies east winds and light snow showers should ramp up later in the afternoon. If the winds increase sooner than expected small wind slabs may begin forming. These may catch someone off guard if they have a “low danger” mindset. The storm looks to increase in intensity Saturday night into Monday evening with winds gusting 50+ mph and possibly a foot or more of total snow in Turnagain Pass. Warm air will likely raise the rain/snow level to 2,000’, ugh. The point is, you should probably get out today if you can but look out for changing conditions if strong winds arrive sooner than expected. 

    Otherwise the avalanche danger is generally low. Keep an eye out for stubborn wind slabs and avoid traveling under glide cracks whenever possible. We are still seeing them opening up and it is possible one released recently on a south slope on Tincan.
