Weak, faceted snow is widespread at the base of the snowpack. A slab of up to 2+ feet sits on this weak layer, thicker in wind-loaded areas. This problem is most pronounced on west through north through east aspects in areas where the slab is thinner, and you are more likely to impact the weak snow below. Wind-loaded areas hold thicker slabs. Snow from recent storms continues to add a load to the snowpack, and it continues to adjust. Two days ago, a rider observed a small remotely triggered avalanche on a steep rollover. Watch for steep rocky slopes, unsupported convexities, and areas near wind-drifted features. You may not see signs of unstable snow (collapsing and cracking), but I bet you will find weak facets if you dig down. The consequences of triggering an avalanche remain high, particularly around road cuts and creek beds where even small avalanches can bury you.
