Triggering a large avalanche 2-4 feet deep is possible in steep terrain. Avalanches could be large enough to bury you. Wind loaded slopes are most dangerous but steep sheltered slopes are also suspect. You may not see shooting cracks, collapsing or other avalanches before triggering a slope. Be conservative around steep slopes.

    Weak snow that formed in November sits near the base of the snowpack in the majority of terrain above 8,500’. These weak layers have been stressed from recent storms. Triggering a persistent slab avalanche is most likely in very steep terrain that faces east through north. An observation from 2 days ago included a remote trigger, cracking and collapsing. These are clear signs of an unstable snowpack. Continue to give the snowpack time to adjust from the recent storm cycles.

    This avalanche is NOT from Togwotee pass but illustrates the nature of a persistent slab avalanche failing on weak layers near the ground.

    Wind slabs from several days ago are becoming less likely to trigger; however, recent reports of human-triggered wind slabs exist. Slabs might be up to 2 feet thick and can be found in wind loaded terrain above 9000’ on a variety of aspects. Use caution around steep wind loaded terrain. Look for stiff drifts and shooting cracks.

    Watch for drifts and stiff pillows. This problem is most likely to be found in exposed terrain below ridges and around rocky features.

Avalanche Discussion

As we move farther from the last loading event, the likelihood of triggering an avalanche decreases. That said, it’s important to remember that colder temperatures and a thinner snowpack (in general) on Togwotee compared to surrounding zones means that it takes longer for the snowpack to adjust. Unfortunately, we get very few clues about weak layers deeper in the snowpack. There remains a chance that you could trigger a persistent slab avalanche without any clues until it’s too late and you are on the slab when it releases. For this reason, continue to use caution around steep shady slopes. Dig down or trench your sled and look for weak, sugary snow.
